This past Saturday, Sony's Columbia Pictures and Screen Gems gave Comic-Con International audiences their first look at a number of their upcoming movies. We've already reported on the Ghost Rider (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/comicconnews.php?id=10427) segment of the presentation, but there were also full presentations for next year's action sequel Underworld: Evolution (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=7080) and the upcoming remake of John Carpenter's The Fog (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=7124).
The presentation kicked off with a look at the new trailer for The Exorcism of Emily Rose (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=7078), which seemed a lot scarier when seen on six giant screens then when it appeared on the internet last week. The trailer gives a pretty good impression of what to expect from the movie, showing bits of the courtroom, as well as the eerie effects of the demonic possession of Emily Rose, as played by Jennifer Carpenter. It also showed the character played by Laura Linney being haunted by all sorts of visions.
After that, Len Wiseman, director of Underworld: Evolution (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=7080) came out and introduced a montage of footage that he edited together especially for Comic-Con that he promised would never be seen anywhere else. The sequence opened with a few scenes from the distant past with armored warriors on horseback, and it also showed lots of Kate Beckinsale's Selene in action. There also were a number of racy sex scenes, one between Beckinsale and Scott Speedman, who plays her werewolf lover Michael Corvin, and a bit of a threesome between three vampires.
After the montage, Wiseman was joined on stage by his wife Kate Beckinsale, as well as Scott Speedman, and the movie's creature effects specialist Patrick Tatopoulos. Since they hadn't seen the edited footage yet, Wiseman showed the montage one more time for their benefit.
Afterwards, Beckinsale told the crowd why she loved playing the character so much. "She's got a really great balance of being very cool and also, having a lot of vulnerability, which you didn't get to see a lot of in the first movie," she said, "And my husband likes me in the outfit." She wanted to use movies like Alien and Terminatoras the basis for her role as an action heroine, but when they first talked about the movie, Wiseman suggested that she check out Russell Crowe in L.A. Confidential instead. Beckinsale also gave everyone a great idea of what it was like putting on (and more importantly) taking off Selene's leather costume. When asked about the most difficult part of the movie, Speedman admitted that doing a sex scene with Beckinsale while her husband looked on wasn't particularly easy.

The director of the upcoming remake of Carpenter's The Fog, Rupert Wainwright came out along with the movie's star Maggie Grace, who is best known for playing Shannon on the ABC drama Lost. Wainwright started out by giving the audience a sneak peek at the new trailer for The Fog (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=7124), which will debut next weekend. Basically, it set up the premise for the movie, which is about a fog that sweeps over an island, killing people in its wake, and it showed a few scenes of Grace with her co-star Tom "Smallville" Welling, and a scene of the movie's co-star Selma Blair in peril. The audience applauded madly after seeing it.
Wainwright, who made his name directing videos for the likes of Michael Jackson and M.C. Hammer before taking on horror with the 1999 thriller Stigmata, thought that producer John Carpenter was more nervous about this remake even then he was. "I was kind of surprised when I went for the interview at the studio that John wasn't there," he said, adding that co-producer David Foster said that John didn't want to impose his own vision on the movie despite having written, directed and scored the original. "John's a genius at making horror movies, but he's also very respectful of other people's space." Grace said that having a shower scene with Tom Welling was something she considered when choosing to do the movie. Wainwright said that the best reason to do this remake was to answer some of the questions that arose from the original movie, and he said that the movie would delve into the past in order to do so.
Then came the moment everyone was waiting for: the Ghost Rider panel, which was already covered in quite a bit of detail here (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/comicconnews.php?id=10427). It featured director Mark Steven Johnson, producer Avi Arad, and the film's co-star Eva Mendes, who plays Roxanne Simpson. (Mendes was quite popular among the mostly male audience.)
After showing a teaser--described in the previous article--Johnson talked about how they were going to be creating the Ghost Rider effects and how his fire would be used as an extension of his personality to express emotion, as well as which parts of the comic book mythology will be brought to the big screen version. (Fans of the character should be very happy.) To wrap up their segment, Johnson gave fans a taste of the new Ghost Rider (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=7950) teaser poster, which looks absolutely amazing.
The big surprise Sony pulled out for their Comic-Con presentation was not the identity of the Spider-Man 3 villains, which Avi Arad ably dodged, but that director Rob Cohen was on hand to show a new extended trailer for his new movie Stealth (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=5335). After showing it, he brought out some surprise guest stars in Jamie Foxx, Jessica Biel and Josh Lucas, who were all in San Diego for the premiere of the movie at a nearby Air Force base. (We'll have more with them very soon, as well.)
Stealth (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=5335) opens on July 29, The Exorcism of Emily Rose (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=7078) opens on September 9, and The Fog (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=7124) opens on October 14. For next year, Screen Gems has Underworld: Evolution (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=7080) scheduled for release on January 20 and Sony will release Ghost Rider (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=7950) on August 4, 2006.
