I literally received this in an email with the subject line: POSTER CHILD.

WOW!?

such mind numbing nonsense. This is the kind of ridiculous nonsense that "conservatives" share throughout the internet to blame welfare programs. And that's what she is. She's the poster child for welfare abuse. Guess what - the more kids you have...the better. Love the part where she says "Why would anyone want to work in America - when the taxpayers will pay for this?"

Additionally - it doesn't help that this is coming from a black woman as it only further perpetuates stereotypes. I'm so pissed about this. Liberals should DENOUNCE this out of hand...that's not what these programs are here for.

How come this person (& those who think like she does) didn't bother to do cursory research to learn that all stats from the U.S. dept of commerce clearly indicate that [rural] WHITES apply for & USE EBT benefits FAR MORE than blacks? Just like this perception that blacks use drugs more than blacks when in fact whites use/"experiment" w/ drugs 5 X more than blacks yet blacks get penalized in the court system for it 13X as their white counterparts.

They don't do any of that for one BIG reason: Whites are generally not defined by what other whites do. Even considering the racist past of the US, individual whites generally escape stereotypes as racists. I think that this is how it should be for everyone by the way.

But for minorities, if one person does it, they all do it. That is what far too many people think. And so these types of things circulate around as an indictment of all of us.

I'll remember that the next time a southerner is assumed to be a racist...or I am for that matter.

People SHOULDN'T be stereotyped but stereotypes are not limited to one group in society.

Speaking of "southerners"....I currently live in TN & its assumed by ppl that I'm not only "from here" but also uneducated & racist like most of these ppl ARE. I wouldnt say if I didn't see/hear it w/ my own eyes & ears. Of course it bothers me alot even though I know its not the case b/c I knew coming down here that its generally assumed ppl down here are less educated, racist...& ultimately it's b/c it seems to be TRUE.

Don't you think that's EXACTLY what racists say about minorities?

it's not the same. racism is based on the ERRONEOUS idea that a [white] person is better/superior than a [black] person SIMPLY b/c of skin color or ethnicity.

the assumption that a person is less educated b/c of their regional location is an example of prejudice but not racist.

That's not what I said.

I'm saying racists use the same excuse you just did about southerners (that you've seen it with your own eyes, so it's true) when they talk about stereotypes of minorities. I'm not saying that making comments about southerners is racist.
