I'm so excited! This is one of the plays that I got to see when I went to London... it was absolutely amazing! And guess who was in it? Richard Griffiths (everyond knows him as "Uncle Vernon" from the Harry Potter movies) :D

Fox (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/topnews.php?id=9972#) Searchlight Pictures, DNA and the BBC have joined forces to bring the National Theatre's production of the award-winning play The History Boys to the big screen (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/topnews.php?id=9972#), it was announced today by Fox Searchlight President Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald of DNA and David Thompson, Head of BBC Films. Utilizing the same talent that won the play three Olivier Awards in January, the film (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/topnews.php?id=9972#) version will be directed by Nicholas Hytner from a script adapted for the screen by the original playwright Alan Bennett. The project will be financed by DNA and the BBC and distributed by Fox Searchlight.

Fox Filmed Entertainment (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/topnews.php?id=9972#) Chairman Tom Rothman, who worked with director Nicholas Hytner and screenwriter Alan Bennett on their previous collaboration, the Oscar®-nominated, BAFTA Award-winning feature The Madness of King George, was instrumental in bringing the project to the studio. Stated Rothman: "We are eager to see the enormously successful new work of Alan Bennett and Nicholas Hytner's collaborative genius translated from stage to screen."

Said Allon Reich of DNA Films: "We are thrilled that DNA will be part of bringing Alan Bennett's wonderful play to the big screen. From the moment we saw Nick Hytner's exhilarating production with its stand-out cast at the National Theatre we were excited about The History Boys' potential to be a great movie."

BBC Films Head David Thompson said: "We are delighted to be doing this film continuing a long and incredibly rewarding association between BBC and Alan Bennett."

"Nicholas, Alan and we always thought the BBC was the right home for this project, and are delighted to be in partnership with them and DNA and Fox, whom we are confident will bring this wonderful piece to as large a worldwide audience as possible," commented Producer Kevin Loader.

Premiered to the world in London's prestigious National Theatre in 2004, The History Boys has won audience and critical acclaim alike including Laurence Olivier Awards for Best New Play, Best Director (Nicholas Hytner) and Best Actor (Richard Griffiths), as well as Evening Standard and Critics Circle Awards for Best Play.

The History Boys centers on an unruly class of bright, funny teenage boys in pursuit of sex, sport and a college degree. Bounced between their maverick English teacher (Richard Griffiths), a young and shrewd professor hired to up their test scores (Stephen Campbell Moore), a grossly out-numbered history teacher (Frances de la Tour), and a headmaster obsessed with results (Clive Merrison), the boys attempt to sift through it all to pass the daunting university admissions process. Their journey becomes as much about how education works, as it is about where education leads.

The key cast of the film will remain the same as the stage version led by Richard Griffiths, Clive Merrison, Frances de la Tour, Stephen Campbell Moore, Sacha Dhawan, Samuel Anderson, Dominic Cooper, Andrew Knott, Samuel Barnett, Russell Tovey, Jamie Parker and James Corden. The History Boys will be produced by Kevin Loader, Damian Jones and Nicholas Hytner.

A distinguished British screenwriter, playwright and actor, Alan Bennett recently won his fourth Olivier Award for Best New Play for "The History Boys." Previously he won two Oliviers for "Talking Heads" in 1992 and one for "Single Spies" in 1989. In addition to being nominated for an Oscar, a BAFTA Award and a Writers Guild of America Award for the feature film The Madness of King George, Bennett won a Writers Guild of Great Britain Award. He has been nominated for eight BAFTA TV (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/topnews.php?id=9972#) Awards and won one for "A Question of Attribution," and received three BAFTA Film nominations. Bennett began his career as an actor and writer for the "Beyond the Fringe" comedy troupe, which also included Dudley Moore, Peter Cook, and Jonathan Miller.

Nicholas Hytner won a BAFTA Award for Best British Film for The Madness of King George. He earned both a Tony and an Olivier Award for his direction of "Carousel" and an Olivier Award for "The History Boys." He was awarded the 1989 London Evening Standard Theatre Award and London Critics Circle Theatre Award for Best Director for "Miss Saigon" and "Ghetto." Hytner's feature film directorial credits also include The Object of My Affection and The Crucible. Hytner is Artistic Director of London's National Theatre.

Production on the The History Boys will begin in the UK in July. It will be overseen by Fox Searchlight's Executive Vice President of Production Claudia Lewis. The deal was brokered by Fox Searchlight Executive Vice President Joseph De Marco, BBC Films Head of Rights and Commercial Affairs Jane Wright, DNA's Head of Business and Legal Affairs Jo Smith, Miles Ketley and Charles Moore of Wiggin & Co. and Anthony Jones of PFD.

Fox (http://www.darkhorizons.com/news05/050610b.php#) Searchlight said Thursday that it has joined efforts with British-based DNA Films (http://www.darkhorizons.com/news05/050610b.php#) and the BBC to bring the National Theatre's production of the award-winning play "The History Boys" to the big screen says The Hollywood Reporter (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr/film/brief_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000954737).

DNA and the BBC will finance the production, with Fox Searchlight handling distribution. The same talent (http://www.darkhorizons.com/news05/050610b.php#) that won the play three Olivier Awards in January will contribute to the film (http://www.darkhorizons.com/news05/050610b.php#) version. Nicholas Hytner will direct from a script adapted for the screen by the original playwright Alan Bennett.

The story centers on an unruly bunch of bright, funny sixth-form boys in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at university. Also a maverick English teacher at odds with the young and shrewd supply teacher, and a headmaster obsessed with results and a history teacher who thinks he's a fool.

Thanks to 'Wankers'..

Hmm DNA - isn't that one of the lottery studios? And Andrew MacDonald, didn't he produce Trainspotting?
