1987's "Adventures in Babysitting", or as we here Down Under know it as "A Night on the Town", was one of those great teen comedies of the late 80's that shouldn't be touched. Whilst it wasn't as well known as say "The Breakfast Club" or fratboy approved as "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", it remains to date a much loved if flawed screwball piece. It not only served as Elisabeth Shue's most fun role to date but also the directorial debut of Chris Columbus ("Home Alone", "Mrs. Doubtfire") who, like most directors, peaked right at the start and went downhill from there (ok "Doubtfire" was an exception).
Now, Disney has hired Hilary Galanoy and Elizabeth Hackett to pen a more contemporary remake. In the original, Shue played a Chicago babysitter stuck looking after a teenage boy, his sex-crazed best friend and a young Thor-loving girl. When Shue's best friend (a big haired Penelope Anne Miller) calls from a downtown bus station to come pick her up, she must take the kids in her car and drive there. One flat tire on the expressway later, the quartet end up in hi-jinks involving carjackers, gangsters and crawling along the outside of a skyscraper where the parents are currently attending a party.
Keith Coogan, Anthony Rapp, Maia Brewton and a young blond Vincent D'Onofrio co-starred in the original. No word yet on a cast or director this time around.
Thanks to 'Mark'.
