Speculation has run rampant today with the debut of a short "Mortal Kombathttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=66904#)" film (subtitled "Rebirth") that made its way anonymously to YouTube. Now, Latino Review (http://www.latinoreview.com/news/mortal-kombat-fans-this-is-the-hard-r-mk-movie-you-ve-been-waiting-for-10164) reports that the film is, as many theorized, a test for a potential R-rated film reboot of the video gamehttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=66904#) franchise.

The short is directed by Kevin Tancharoenhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=66904#), the director of last year's Fame (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=22888), and features a cast that includes name actors like Michael Jai White (Jax), Jeri Ryanhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=66904#) (Sonya Blade), Matt Mullins (Johnny Cage), Lateef Crowder (Baraka) and Ian Anthony Dale (Scorpion) with fight choreography by Larnell Stovall.

Though there is no guarantee that these actors will play the characters in a feature film version or even that a feature film will actually happen, the short is already a huge success online, with the word "Kombat" already a trending topic on Twitter.

UPDATE: Jeri Ryan has revealed on her Twitter account what the video was made for - "Not a game trailer. Actually was made by the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film."

Uhm....PLEASE BE MADE!!! This looks freakin' bad ass. It's like they're taking a page from The Dark Knight and making it really gritty and realistic video game movie. I mean, look at Reptile? Fuck he's nasty LOL. And Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade? Totally perfect!! I've always been a fan of Mortal Kombat so i'm totally hoping this turns into a movie.

HOLY SHIT this looks AWESOME. If it turns into an R rated movie, I am ON TOP of that!

:( Johnny Cage is dead to start with, but it looks like we'll see Jax get his start and if he's portrayed by Michael Jai White in the film, all the better!

I think it's pretty funny that in the other Mortal Kombat movie Johnny Cage died as well....I guess movie makers don't like him very much LOL. :p

Reptile, Sub Zero, and Melina were my all time favorites, I would always use those characters in the game. So i'm super happy Reptile and Sub Zero would definitely be in it if it's made, so i'm crossing my fingers for Melina [or Kitana] to be put in as well.

I really hope this movie is made. The featurette looks sooooo bad ass as it is!

I always used Sonya or Sub Zero, or Scorpion, so yeah, I'm thrilled with the lineup.

Honestly just based off the reaction this clip is getting on the web, I don't see why the movie wouldn't be made at this point. It's created a huge fuss. The Bros would be stupid NOT to make it at this point. They've seen how much they banked on TDK. I know 'video game' movies don't typically do well, but MK is a franchise with cinematic history. A Reboot done right could be a golden goose.

Totally. That clip was put up June 7th and it's already had over a million hits, not to mention all the other dups that are up on youtube. I hope they decide to do the movie.

Plus Resident Evil and Lara Croft were both video games and did fantastic in the box office. I think the revamped version of Mortal Kombat would do just as well. Especially with it's more realistic and darker undertones.

Saw this vid the other day and though I've never been a fan of the films (or really even the games) I have to admit that this looks interesting. I'll be following this story.

I always used Sindel and would do this hair whip move on my sister all the time that would kill her in seconds. I used it so much my mom BANNED me from using the move LOL!
