ATWT Cancellation Press Release:
NEW YORK, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ — As The World Turns, the long-running daytime drama, will complete its final season on the CBS Television Network in September 2010. CBS has decided not to renew the show for the 2010/2011 broadcast season, thereby ending its 54-year run on the Network.

“Throughout our history, As The World Turns has remained dedicated to sharing compelling stories that have entertained fans for more than five decades,” said Executive Producer Chris Goutman. “We are disappointed and saddened by the news that the show is not being renewed. It will certainly be a loss for all of us, and for the show’s loyal audience.”
“As The World Turns has been a cornerstone of our business and a tremendous asset to the company,” said Brian T. Cahill, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, TeleNext Media, Inc. “We are proactively seeking a new outlet to carry the show, and are open to exploring innovative formats and relationships that will enable the future success of ATWT.”

The epitome of multi-generational, serial storytelling, As The World Turns has been entertaining generations of fans for more than half a century. The show boasts a well-loved and long-tenured cast, including actress Helen Wagner (Nancy Hughes) who spoke the first words on the premier broadcast of ATWT in 1956. To this day, Nancy is still at the helm of the Hughes family, earning Wagner the distinction of portraying the longest-running character in television history.

Other veteran cast members still on the show today include Eileen Fulton (Lisa Grimaldi) and Don Hastings (Dr. Bob Hughes) who each have played their characters for 49 years; Marie Masters (Dr. Susan Stewart) with 41 years; and Kathryn Hays (Kim Hughes) who has starred on the show for 37 years.

As The World Turns has tackled many contemporary themes over the years, including AIDS, Alzheimer’s, alcoholism and more, while remaining true to the show’s rich history and realistic characters. In 1988, the serial made history by introducing daytime television’s first gay male character, Hank Eliot (played by Brian Starcher), for which it was honored at the first annual GLAAD media awards in 1990.

Created by Irna Phillips, As The World Turns premiered on April 2, 1956 as a 30-minute live television show, unprecedented at the time for a soap opera. Top-rated from 1959 to 1971, it was the first daytime serial with its own spin-off, Our Private World, which aired in prime-time. The show switched to color on 1967, and expanded from a half-hour in length to one hour in 1975. Over the years, ATWT has been awarded numerous accolades, including 58 Daytime Emmy awards.

Set in the fictional Midwestern town of Oakdale, As The World Turns launched the careers of many now-famous Hollywood celebrities, such as Dana Delaney, James Earl Jones, Julianne Moore, Parker Posey, Meg Ryan, and Marisa Tomei to name a few.

First Guiding Light and now As The World Turns? Wow...soaps are seriously dying out. :( I was never a fan of ATWT, but still, it speaks volumes in the daytime industry that two prominent soaps are canceled within a year of each other. I just hope none of the ABC soaps are touched by this!

Soaps are meat.

Women are working now, soaps are expensive and actors make too much.

I take no real joy in it as I remember my Mama and her sisters enjoying them when I was a kid.

My baby sitter was a fan of ATWT. I remember the Hughes clan , especially Margo and her husband Kevin. I think the actress who played Margo is on GH now. My favorite on ATWT was Lucinda Walsh (played by veteran actress, Elizabeth Hubbard) she was a grand dame bitch in heels. She was also a long running character on the show but I dont know if she's still on there now.

This is sad to see though :(

The Younge & The Restless, The Bold & The Beautifull and All My Children are the ones to watch...they are really the top rated soaps now. B&B has consistently been #2 (2nd only to its sister show Y&R) on CBS for YEARS. and if either one of those two is cancelled by CBS....omg i dont even want to think :( [ i grew up watching those and recently got back into them regularly] and AMC is a POP CULTURE treature...who DOESNT know who Erika Kane (Susan Lucci) is?

The same can be said about General Hospital. It produced the most famous couple in daytime [and television] history, Luke and Laura. And GH still holds the title for most viewed episode with over 30 million viewers just to watch Luke and Laura marry back in 1981. But honestly, if any ABC soap is in jeaopardy of being canceled, it would be One Life to Live. AMC will be moving to the west coast in a week or so, and like you said Farrah, it has Susan Lucci fronting it. So I don't see GH or AMC being in jeaopardy YET, but you never know.

And cctually, Garrick, soap actors don't make as much as they used to. In the recent years many soap stars, including Susan Lucci, have taken a 40% pay cut to insure the soap can stay on the air.

The main probably with atleast ABC soaps is Brian Frons, the president of ABC daytime, has a hard on for the 18-35 demographic. So the majority of the storylines are aimed toward the younger generation, as well as vetren cast members being back burned for newer talent. He needs to realize that there are people over the age of 35 who have been watching soaps for probably 35 plus years. If there was time spent trying to make it more ensemble-like, I really think soaps wouldn't be in THAT much jeaopardy. That and they need to take into consideration SoapNet [for ABC soaps and Y&R] and people DVRing them. Because I know a lot of people, including me, who've been recording GH for years with a DVR and watch it every day.

Anyhow, that's my soap tyrant for today! LOL :p

Yeah GH is another strong soap. It had two spin offs (I liked Port Charles myself).

So there's really 4 that are high profile right now.

Personally i think Soapnet should be a haven for these soaps. They need to stop showing shitty reruns of shows that dont qualify as REAL soaps like One Tree Hill and make room for other soaps. Y&R is on there, its sister show B&B should be on there. Soapnet is how I watch AMC and Y&R since i'm at work and they always rebroadcast the day's show on soapnet at night and i just DVR B&B.
