http://www.mtv.com/onair/trl/flipbooks/celebguest/images/janet.jpg NEW YORK – The MTV Video Music Awards are known for kicking off with the kind of zaniness that has come to define the show, from a dazed Britney Spears and a shocking Madonna to a disgraced Pee Wee Herman.

But on Sunday, it is expected to have a somber start with a musical tribute to Michael Jackson, led by his sister Janet.

Jackson died a drug-induced death on June 25 at age 50. The coroner's office has labeled the death a homicide, and prosecutors are still investigating.

Jackson was not only an integral part of MTV's history — his legendary videos changed the way music clips were made and he was the first black artist whose work was aired on the fledgling network — but he also provided the VMAs with some of its most memorable moments, including his infamous smooch with then-wife Lisa Marie Presley in 1994.

The Jackson tribute won't be the only moment where Jackson's presence will be felt. The network is also airing the premiere of the trailer for "This Is It," the documentary about Jackson's preparations for his comeback concerts that were to be held in London. That film is due to come out in October.

The show will be hosted by British comedian Russell Brand and featuring acts ranging from Lady Gaga to Pink. Last year, Brand hosted for the first time, where he poked fun at the Jonas Brothers' vow of purity, among other ribald moments.

The VMAs will be held at Radio City Music Hall, marking the show's return to New York for the first time since 2006. Beyonce and Lady GaGa lead all artists with nine nominations each, followed by Britney Spears with seven nominations but the show's winners aren't nearly as memorable as the wacky and wild moments and noteworthy performances.

Both divas are expected to perform, along with Jay-Z, Taylor Swift, Green Day and other acts. And the night won't just focus on music: Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, the much fawned-over stars from the vampire film "Twilight," will present clips from the movie's sequel, "New Moon."

- With Lady Gaga and Beyonce both nominated for nine awards each, this will be an epic battle between the fashionable divas. Although Lady Gaga, who is the latest artist to be called "The next Madonna" [Madonna holding the record for the most VMA wins in the show's history], is rumored to have the upper hand, we think Beyonce's 'Single Ladies' will rock the house vote. Plus, these two ladies will both be performing, so we're hoping to see spectacular stage productions.

- Janet Jackson's tribute to her brother Michael Jackson is sure to be a massive celebration of the late King of Pop's life. Little information was given as to what exactly Janet's tribute will entail though. Michael himself had several memorable VMA moments, including scoring a trophy in 1984 for 'Thriller' and 10 years later famously kissing wife Lisa Marie Presley on stage.

- This year, MTV will debut the movie trailers for the eagerly anticipated Michael Jackson documentary, 'This Is It,' and the extended trailer from the second installment of the 'Twilight' vampire franchise, 'New Moon.'

British comedian Russell Brand will be making an encore appearance as MC. Last year his jokes about the Jonas Brothers' virginity caused controversy for weeks. We cannot wait to see who his target will be this year.

- Alicia Keys will join Jay-Z onstage for a live performance of 'Empire State of Mind' off his 'The Blueprint 3' album. The combination will surely rock the house.

The red carpet fashion and entrances are sometimes just as exciting as the award show itself. We're hoping someone tops last year's rides, which included T-Pain arriving on an elephant.

- Every year Britney Spears outdoes herself. While we aren't expecting her to kiss Madonna or dance around with a snake on her shoulders, we're hoping she gives us something to chat about the next day. We'll have to wait and see.
