Hey! Show some love for the lovely arachnids of Marvel!
Jessica Drew is one of my long time favs from Marvel who's finally been brought back from exile.
She's gone from the "women hate me, but men fall over me" state to the........:erm:.............."Women like me know as well as men" state.
She's not some clone of Peter and she's got one of the snazziest costumes. She does what she thinks is right and can kick butt.
Am I alone?
Then there's Spider-Woman II now called Archnae. She had the black & white costume first and her present is rather smart looking too. She's a mother who does what she thinks is right and kicked Ms Marvel around while running to my country. (I know that'll get Spellbinder after me! :hehe2:)
While she generally made me pine for Jessica to return, she hooked me as a character with all the CW crap plus what little I saw in the Avengers/Force Works.
Am I alone?
Will I survive the "punishment" from Spellbinder? :hehe2:
Mattie.....................should have been called Spider-Girl. That's all I'm saying there for now.

I like Jessica Drew shes such a cool character but after secret invasion and the skrull thing i wonder how much we seen is her and how much is skrull. Bendis will probably do right by her since she is one of his favorite characters.

Spider Woman I has a rich history. She's worked with Spider man (obviously) , as well as in the world of espionage. She's a close ally of Wolverine's, or at least she was until recently. She's been alligned with the X-men too. AND she's a close friend of Carol Danvers. It was Jessica who saved Carol from death after Rogue tossed Carol off the golden gate bridge during their now historic battle in which Rogue nearly drained the LIFE out of Carol. Carol and Jessica have been close ever since.
Her powers have really become defined now. She can fly, her venom blasts pack more punch, her strength and fighting ability allow her to best opponents up to and including Wolverine. She's the ORIGINAL Spider Woman and will always be the standard.
But my PERSONAL favorite is Spider Woman II. She was a college roomoie and friend of Dr. Val Cooper's, who paved the way for Julia to gain her powers. SHe got swept into the Secret Wars storyline before joining up with Val Cooper's "Freedom Force' (most of whom were apart of Mystique's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants) she didnt last long though. After a tussel with the X-men (where she faced the original Spider Woman) and being briefly involved in the "Mutant Massacre" storyline, Julia went rogue and left Freedom Force.
Her time with the Avengers was perhaps her best. She was prominently featured in the West Coast Avengers. She even beat the hell out of Spider Man :D her powers were definately different from Jessica's...the psi webs were unbreakable, she could leap great distances, had super strength and was a superb fighter. but her conniving husband was always out to derail her and take her daughter away.
She retired for a long while before ANOTHER Spider Woman III (Charlotte) began attacking all the former Spider Women. Then we saw Spider Woman IV (Mattie Franklin) whom I was convinced was gay. She looked and acted rather butch but her crush on Human Torch suggested that maybe she was straight. Spider Woman IV's powers were the LEAST tied into the Spider family mythos imo. She gained them from the cult she was apart of and she had flight, super strength, and invulnerability.
Julia remains the standout for me BECAUSE of her struggle in Civil War. She started off "pro reg" b ut then changed her mind and decided to take her daughter to escape. She battled with Ms. Mavel AND Wonder Man and held them off but in the end, she was captured and her daughter taken. She eventually confronted Ms. Marvel again and that was one of the many things that showed Ms. Marvel HERSELF wasnt so sold on the "registration act" that Iron Man has concocted.

Ummm, I don't know if I should feel safe or not with that post of Spellbinder's...............
Mattie barely registered with me. I kept thinking that why make another when the REAL one and the rather good second one were around. Some nice Bart Sears art but that was about it for me. I never considered her being one way or another sexually.

I'm not thinking about you, you rogue kitty. Remember, I'm a COUGAR compared to you. :fdevil:
I want Arachne to come back to prominence. Jessica is always the original and the standard but she was JUST "before" my time. i grew up with Spider Woman II and by then Jessica had "retired" from being a Super Heroine. Some of my most memorable readings of Spider Woman include, her TIMELY rescue of Carol after Rogue callously hurls her off the Golden Gate Bridge; The team up of Spider Woman, Dazzler and Storm to save Kitty from Caliban; and Spider Woman's unspoken "draft" onto the X-men when they faced the new "Freedom Force" and she encountered her "Spider" successor.
If i could credit Bendis with ONE THING...it would be the well planned revival and revamp of Jessica as the original Spider-Woman.

I'm still older then you, I think, so you don't rate cougar, but hey.....pounce on me all you want. :heee:

See, this is why I say I'm older, I had Jessica in my time. Hey that sounded naughty. For me, it was her first issue that got me hooked. The small scene with her landlord feeling sorry for her and all the women being mean and gossipy about her. Then there was that she was a pretty slick package for powers, costume and personality. "Bugger off Mr. SHIELD agent." Julia started appealing to me with her concern and focus for being a mother first. It seemed so real to me. Also, with the right artist, her costume looked good.
Bendis can and has done a number of good things like that. But it still doesn't make up for the damage he's done, in my view, to the Marvel U and so many of it's characters, like Iron Man for one. Read Tony's red & silver era...he was a good guy.
Meow, meow fellow cat! :heee:

ok spoilers from New Avengers
Jessica Drew almost confirmed skrull could be nothing but it looks like she might have gone green, knowing Bendis this is probably so he can retcon her history to how he likes it.

I understood that it was just a trick on the part of the Skrulls while the real Jessica was adventuring, so as to misdirect folk.

I am a Moron that can't uses spoiler tags . . . . .anyway the change isn't confined but ALOT of things would make more sense under the idea she is a skrull and it would explain what happen to the Spider-Woman series that was supposed to happen. Spider-Woman is one of the characters Bendis LOVES just like Luke Cage (please not a skrull so few good black characters in marvel's forefront) so this will just be him setting up to bring back her from when he was a kid probably.

what will that mean for her powers? She's quite powerfull now...and the progression to her powers makes perfect sense.
i rather liked her history, it was more mysterious than Spider Man's power genesis.

So you think the recent embellishments of her origin will get chucked? I hope they are, they were not needed in my view.
But hey! That could mean that silly scene in the New Avengers were she used her "make men stupid" power and explanation not her. Awwww, I liked that one.

Before we can start figuring out how shes been changed. we have to know:
1-Is she a skrull for sure
2-when was she switched if yes
3-was the skrull impostor made different form spider woman
I'm still holding out hope Wolverine is a skrull in at least 3 titles so they can cut down on him being in EVERY SINGLE TITLE.

That I can understand and agree.
I'm still waiting for Bendis and Quesada to leave or stop making poor to bad decisions about the MU.

the spell that doctor strange cast to reveal any skrulls in their midst...it seemed to have a very ODD effect on Spider-Woman. Isnt that the most obvious indicator? that and when Wolverine hurled her out of a plane and she nearly panicked even though she can FLY? (and not just glide like she used to) I was so GLAD whe she kicked Wolverine's furry ass and knocked him out LOL.

Ditto
But the knocking him out after the plane crash and taking the body to Stark (which seems a good idea) looks likes a skrully move in hindsight. If you're trying to weaken the Heroes by trying to get them to fight one another then tipping them off to the invasion and getting your self onto the flagship Super Team the Mighty Avengers.

Could the odd effect be for some other reason? Also, he could be a Skrull. Geez I'm really disliking Marvel for all this. A neat clean story arc in Avengers wasn't enough, it has to be some stupid crossover event that'll never end, screw up a ton of characters while trying to undo all the screw ups from last time. BUT CAPTAIN AMERICA IS GREAT!!!! I'LL BITE ANYONE WHO SAYS OTHERWISE!!! Pee on their shoes too!

"It will be written by me and drawn and painted by Alex Maleev," he said. "Now you know why it was delayed." Bendis added that "whoever it is who will be in the Spider-Woman costume" will be in a very dark place. It's going to be something in the same kind of tone as Daredevil for fans of that comic, but also something very new and different.""Whoever it is". A little cryptic there. Alex Maleev is great for the dark, noirish stuff. Love his style.
