Early reactions to the film seem favorable. MSN Movies gives it 7 1/2 out of 8 stars...comic book boards everywhere are buzzing...but how about here? How many of you are rushing out of work, school or where ever to see Robert Downey Jr. channel Tony Stark?

The movie has everyone from Gwenyth Paltrow and Terrence Howard to Jeff Bridges (and a rumoured appearence by Samuel L. Jackson as Colonel Nick Fury himself).

Personally? I'm not worried about it. I hate Iron Man the character and while he may be the biggest thing in MU (after selling out his friends and half the super hero community at large and being the same old asshole he's always been) what goes up...MUST come down. it's only a matter of time before he fails.

I'll wait for the DVD...and even then, only AFTER it comes out of "New Release" (its cheaper that way LOL)

While not today, I hope to go and check out the movie soon. I'm really excited for this one being a big Iron Man fan.

I'm a fan of the character and I will see this movie at some point.
So far, what I've seen and read makes me think it's a good flick and pretty good towards Tony Stark unlike the comics for the last three years or so.

Thank Goodness that this is NOT the Ultimate version.

IRON MAN BOX-OFFICE NIPPING AT SPIDEY's HEELS
The first early estimates for Iron Man Friday North America box office are starting to come in, and according to the tracking website BoxOfficeGuru.com, the film took in an estimated $33 million dollars in its opening frame ($38.5m when you add in the Thursday evening tally) seemingly putting it on pace to meet or even exceed some of more optimistic full weekend estimates.

The opening gives Iron Man the second largest first-day debut for a non-sequel in box office history, trailing only the $39.4m the original Spider-Man took in, although that of course was in 2002 ticket price dollars.
Iron Man could score $85-90M over the full weekend and $90-95M when adding in Thursday's grosses, according to BoxOfficeGuru.com.

The rub for superhero and genre movies is always its legs, however, or how is performs in the coming weeks after the core fan-base sees it opening weekend. With very favorable critical response and strong fan word-of-mouth, Iron Man may be poised to perform relatively strongly for a comic book based film, although it will be facing stiff competition with Speed Racer and the latest Indiana Jones installment both bowing this month as well.

Look updates with more details on Iron Man's performance later today and throughout the weekend.

I saw it. The casting alone made it successful in my opinion. It is VERY good, I will probably see it again.

Yes...it was VERY good. To say the least. They really did it right this time, whether you like Iron Man or not. I'm ready for the sequel, haha. They've raised the bar a bit for their movies...now to see if Hulk can deliver as well.

I heard good reviews for this as well but I too was never big on Iron Man. I voted to wait for it out on DVD. Most of the comic books turned movies in my opinion are disappointing. But based on the raves about the film I'll just wait for it on DVD. Now if it was Underworld 3 then I'd get my ass to the movie theater lol.

I can't believe it.......a friend who generally shows disdain greater then mine for going to movies is thinking of going and seeing Iron Man, all do to some of the reviews. Wow.

I keep thinking about the last 8 or so times I went out to a movie and felt ripped off, not due to the film, but due to the state of the cinema chairs, environment and other goers being a pile of scum.

Then there's the whole "it'll be out for Christmas on DVD with added scenes" thing too.

Eh..it's just a movie worth seeing in the theaters in that environment. Which is good. Need more reasons to actually want to go to the movies these days.

Oh yeah, he can fly! Iron Man Rockets to $201M worldwide!

ComingSoon.net has posted the impressive box office estimates for Iron Man, which follow below:

Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios' Iron Man exceeded all expectations, earning a massive $100.75 million during its opening weekend domestically from 4,105 theaters and $104.2 million since debuting Thursday night, averaging $24,543 per site. Internationally, the film has also earned an incredible $96.7 million in 57 countries since it began opening Wednesday, putting its worldwide total at $201 million after just five days! The comic book adaptation, directed by Jon Favreau and starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard and Jeff Bridges, was the 10th biggest opening of all-time and the fourth biggest for a superhero movie. Among nonsequels, it came in behind only the first Spider-Man, which opened with $114.8 million. As far as May openings, Iron Man came in at #8, just behind X-Men: The Last Stand's $102.8 million when you look at the three-day figure (not counting Thursday night). Financed by Marvel Studios and distributed by Paramount, the movie cost about $150 million to make and $75 million to market.

The first Friday box office estimates are just beginning to come in, and according to the tracking website Boxofficeguru.com, in its second weekend Iron Man easily held off the debut of Speed Racer in the battle of "genre" films. In fact, Speed Racer only finished third in the Friday tally, behind the Cameron Diaz/Ashton Kutcher romantic comedy What Happens in Vegas.

Iron Man is estimated to have racked up another $15.3 million on Friday, a 56.6% drop from its opening Friday figure of $35.2m. While it's typical of superhero/comic book based movies to drop in upwards of 50% in their second weekends, if that percentage holds throughout the entire three-day sophomore frame, it may some something of a minor surprise/disappointment for Paramount/Marvel considering the overwhelmingly positive critical and word-of-mouth buzz the film has received.

The gold standard of superhero movie "legs" continues to be 2002's Spider-Man, which dropped only 38% in its second weekend.

As for Speed Racer - subject of much more mixed reception - it's estimated to have made $5.85 million on Friday, placing it below most industry predictions. To put it in some perspective, in its second Friday, Iron Man enjoyed a $3722.00 per screen average, whereas as Speed Racer averaged less than half of that at $1622.00

Look for more information on the weekend estimates here soon at Newsarama.

Third thats pretty bad for Speed Racer

Third thats pretty bad for Speed Racer

Not all that unexpected. It's kiddie fare compared to Iron Man. I suspect it could have an upswing within the next two weeks. Unless it tanks as I suspect it could. It looks lousy to me, but it's got Christina Ricci in it, so that's a plus for me and there's also that I like stuff that can be for the kiddies at times. Stuart Little, the Pixar films, Thunderbirds and some others come to mind. I will admit though, the colours are looking eye injuring to me in just the adverts.

I think I'll be seeing Iron Man next week perhaps.

I wonder if the next film will have a version of the red & silver armor and cover armor wars? Maybe even have War Machine in it.
