Ive been hearing numerous references to the "Illuminati" for a while now and yet, I have no idea who they are. I know they are/were involved in exiling the Hulk (which kind of seemed like a good thing lol) and theyve been connected to Civil War and the Superhuman Registration act. But just who are they? and what is their member roster?

The Illuminati are a secret six member group of the most connected, most powerful and most influential heroes on earth. each one is the leading force in a group and represents an archetype of Heroes

Reed Richards - Leader of the Fantastic Four/science heroes
Tony Stark - Iron Man of the avengers/heroes that work with the government
Dr Strange - Sorcerer Supreme/magical heroes
Black Bolt - King of the Inhumans/heroes that separated from humanity
Narmor - King of Atlantis (3/4 of the world)/Heroes that work as loners
Professor X - Mutant leader and leader of the X men/Heroes that fight for acceptance

They banded together after the Kree/Skrull war to fight battles before they became bigger problems realizing that if they just worked together they could have stopped it early. Black Panther was offered a spot but thought (rightly) no good came come of the group. They broke up after the exiling of the Hulk. The New Avenger Illuminati while full of retcons was really good and each book takes place in a different era of Marvel History as they try to maintain peace.

Alright to anyone that read this series quick question for an argument I'm having. In the beyonder issue i got the impression that Secret War II never happened and the Beyonder's origins were just him messing with everyone so no one knows what he is. Some people i know are taking the issue to mean the Beyonder is a mutant Inhuman. Thoughts??

Yes, they basically retconned Secret Wars II to make the Beyonder an Inhuman. However, in the latest hardcover of the Official Marvel Handbook, the Beyonder is still listed as a cosmic presence and as a sentiment cosmic cube, despite what happened in the Illuminati series. I think that people realized how stupid Bendis' idea of making the Beyonder an Inhuman was, and they have already retconned it out of continuity. However, I still have a years' worth of unread comics to go through, so don't take my word for it.

It really was a stupid idea to begin with, so you didn't miss much. They basically touched on all the past "event" stories like Secret Wars, the Infinity Gauntlet, Kree-Skrull War, etc. to provide some retroactive support for their whole Secret Invasion plot.

Alright new news looks like the Illuminati is getting their own Counter group. Looks like Doom, Namor, Emma Frost, Loki, The Hood and i'm not sure about the guy in the center might be Purple Man
