The Flash outruns the reaper 23 years after saving universe and dying

But in DC Universe 0, comic book folks have put Barry's pieces back together.

For a superhero who can run faster than the speed of light, it sure took him long enough to return.

DC Comics is reviving Barry Allen - aka The Flash - the popular superhero killed off by the publisher 23 years ago, the Daily News has learned.

Unlike other comic book deaths - even Superman went up, up and away for just a year - The Flash was so good at dying that his demise became part of comic book lore.

Many fans had come to like the character better dead than alive after he was disintegrated saving the universe.

"That's the point of comics - they don't have to die, because they're fictional creations," said Grant Morrison, one of the writers behind the comeback.

"We can do anything with them, and we can make them come back and make them defy death," Morrison said. "And that's why people read comics, to get away from the way life works, which is quite cruel and unheroic and ends in death."

Not so fast, said comic historian Alan Kistler. "Barry's had this heroic sacrifice, which is the coolest thing you can do for a superhero," insisted Kistler - unaware that DC Comics will announce the Flash's resurrection today in the last panel of its "DC Universe #0."

"If you brought Barry back, the question is can you do anything to top it?"

Well, The Flash did save the entire comic book industry.

When the red-and-gold costumed speedster debuted in "Showcase #4" in 1956, super heroes were virtually extinct; Westerns and war comics were all the rage.

All that changed with the surprise sales success of The Flash, rejuvenating the likes of Superman and paving the way for future superheroes, including Spider-Man.

"Without Barry Allen, we'd still be reading comic books about cowboys," Geoff Johns, co-writer of the new Flash comics, told the Daily News.

Morrison and Johns had been waiting for the right moment to bring back their childhood hero. In Johns' words, "When the greatest evil comes back to the DC Universe, the greatest hero needed to return."

Comic hyperbole aside, Morrison believes that it won't take long for The Flash to get back up to speed, alongside his Justice League teammates, Batman and Wonder Woman.

"He's the God of the modern world," Morrison said. "People are doing more everyday, moving faster and I think the Flash can be their hero. I do think he's a superhero for now."

The original Fastest Man Alive has finally out run death itself. can't wait to see how Barry's return effects the Crisis

The only thing I'm particularly interested in there. Id Crisis and IC didn't do all that much for me. Mind you, all those spill out crossovers were what mostly did it. *sigh* Why can't this be handled like the original Crisis was, just a single series with the needed crossover to the regular titles. *sigh*

They don't take dead mice in exchange for comics.............

I'm not sure I like Barry being brought back.
While I'll admit to being more of a Wally fan, plus Jay fan, then Barry fan.....I think this could be a big case of fail. If this happens......I'm giving money to a certain poster on a certain other site forum to exact revenge.......http://e.deviantart.com/emoticons/p/plotting.gif

LOL compared to most comics this is really self contained 25 issues spread over self contained minis and one-shots. I'm excited for this solely because of the writing team behind it.

er wow Entertainment Weekly is really going after the comic market exclusive preview of Final Crisis and of Darkseid's new look

Roughly two decades after saving the world(s) in Crisis on Infinite Earth, and a couple of years after staving off an Infinite Crisis, DC's go-to do-gooders — Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and more — will round out the trilogy with Final Crisis. In the series (out monthly for seven issues beginning May 28), ol' Justice League nemesis Libra returns to corral a rogues' gallery of villains to upend all that is good and pure.

Perhaps you are a bit skeptical about yet another Big! Event! Comic! We would be too, were it not for the deployment of two secret weapons: the fertile mind of writer Grant Morrison (All-Star Superman) and the skilled hand of artist J.G. Jones (52), both of whom could very well make this the event to trump all events. (Well, at least until the next one.) Don't believe us? Take a gander at EW's three-part First Look in anticipation of the book's launch: five never-before-seen pages from Final Crisis' first issue (titled ''DOA: The God of War''); Morrison's original scripts for these pages; and a peek at Jones' ever-evolving design of the universe-ruling rapscallion Darkseid, who's poised to make a thunderous impression on the series in the near future. —Nisha Gopalan

So the first issue has been out for a while and while not anything big it was good. It started out slow but I'm looking forward to FC building to something bigger. The only real shocker moment would be the death of Martian Manhunter which I'm disappointed only got one page. Heres hoping FC: Requiem gives him a good send off. The only real problem i can see with FC is there is no easy lead in for anyone thats not heavy in DC history. There is NO hand holding in this series, I might go ZOMG its Kamandi most people will be like whos he. good book, not for the uninitiated. 3.5 out 5 :)

CCI LIVE: DC Final Crisis Management

* by Hannibal Tabu, Columnist

Executive editor Dan Didio jumped the panel off enthusiastically, introducing editor Eddie Berganza, writers Peter Tomasi, Greg Rucka (who ran to hug Didio), Brad Meltzer, artist Phillip Tan (working with Meltzer on "Final Crisis: Revelation"), colorist Alex Sinclair, and fan favorites Grant Morrison and Geoff Johns.

Again Didio asked fans what happened in "Final Crisis," getting a series of answers including a man dressed as Martian Manhunter saying "I died!"

"Let me open up with a slight apology," Didio said. "We were hoping 'Final Crisis' #3 would be in your hands right now, but production problems along the way, it's gonna come out next week or the week after. Didio then brought two fans on stage to read photocopied pages of the issue and then give the crowd a synopsis.

"Dan said, 'Do you want to do a story called Final Crisis? Have you got an ideas?' and I said, 'Yeah,'" Morrison said. "It was your idea," he said to Didio, "take responsibility!" He also noted that the fans reading the issue were crying.

"Asking him if he has ideas is like putting a match to gasoline," Rucka said.

Morrison indicated that he just finished the script to issue five.

"The losers are trying not to die," Rucka said of "Final Crisis: Resist. "They're failing miserably. It is 30 pages of ... well, imagine occupied France in the second World War. Imagine the Nazis are the New Gods. Imagine you're you. Enjoy! I'm writing it with Eric Trautmann." Rucka credited Trautmann with the brilliant issue of Checkmate where the Gideon 2 system was under constant attack while picking a new Castellan.

Tan didn't understand a lot of references. "He's never seen 'Raiders of the Lost Ark," Berganza said. Rucka said that the Question had to have a fedora, and Tan didn't know what that was. Rucka

J.G. Jones walked in just about then.

"If ever a title was true, this is it," Meltzer said of "Final Crisis: Last Will and Testament." "If Grant is gonna blow it all up, can I do the night before? What are you gonna do the day before you're gonna die?"

"I'd get really drunk," Johns said.

Meltzer continued. "We do the drunk, the sex, all the obvious ones, and one that's not obvious," Meltzer said. "While I was writing it, my mother died of breast cancer. While the artist was drawing it, his mother died of breast cancer. You put something of your personal life into it." Meltzer then showed a fan the last page on his Blackberry.

"Superboy Prime goes to the future and messes up stuff really bad," Johns said of "Legion of Three Worlds." "'Rogues' Revenge' with Scott Kolins, the Rogues are hunting down Inertia, and some of this stuff spills over to 'Flash: Rebirth.' 'Rage of the Red Lanterns' introduces the Red Lanterns, and the Guardians have decided to execute Sinesto, and the Red Lanterns wanna do it first."

Tomasi said, "I remember sitting at the laptop saying 'I gotta make somebody cry on this one,' and I realized I was choking up."

The distraction of loud rumbling bass from a panel next door drove Didio to open the floor up to questions.

A first time con visitor asked a question about the death of the New Gods, referencing Seven Soldiers, Birds of Prey, Teen Titans and

"Darkseid falls backwards through time," Morrison said. "This is 'Final Crisis 4' I'm telling you. Once new earth collapses, the entire multiverse collapses. Darkseid, when he falls backwards through time, it's the first time he's ever physically been here. Every time you've seen him, he's been a projection. I wanted to do 'Mister Miracle' as everyone is all Black, I wanted to do Metron as Sun Ra. They shouldn't be white."

"Sometimes, artists just draw white guys," Meltzer said.

"It all makes sense when it starts in my head," Morrison said, "and then reality strikes."

The Endless will not be in "Final Crisis," staying in their Vertigo wheelhouse.

What writer would go back to books? Johns would go back to "Flash" (which he is) and "Teen Titans." Rucka would go back to "Wonder Woman." Meltzer would return to "Justice League of America." Peter Tomasi would like more "Black Adam."

DC sent Jones to Scotland to redesign the New Gods. He said, "I just do what I'm told, Grant's the mad genius. The only reason I did this job, you [Didio] came to me and said, 'Do you wanna work with Grant again? Do you want to do New Gods?' Sold."

So I just picked up Final Crisis 1-3. They're pretty good, I guess. I guess I feel a little bit lost on what's going on but the "shocking" bits are enough to keep me interested enough to find out what's going to happen lol.

the thing about Final Crisis is that its HEAVY on very old continuity. which while not a bad thing does make it very hard to get some of the references in some places. Sunny Sumo i never heard of, Kamandi and Anthro i had to look up on Wikipedia. However the book has been surprisingly easy to follow and very enjoyable. Following any tie-ins??

Final Crisis has 3 minis coming out with it

FC: Rogue's Revenge - following the misadventures of the Flash's rogues getting revenge on villain Inertia for "tricking" them into killing Flash IV (Bart Allan). one issue out already, 3 issues (all oversized) total, standard villain protagonist roles, not much continuity to worry about

FC: Legion of Three Worlds - Written by Geoff Johns AKA DC's golden boy. This man hasn't written much yet that isn't pure gold. Heavy on continuity but Johns has a skill with making crossovers accessible. for the lead in read JLA/JSA crossover Lightning Saga, and Action Comics #858 to #864. this is the tiein I'm going to get without fail, cause well its Geoff Jones writing the Legion of Superheroes.

FC: Revelations - Greg Ruska writing FC from the street level. Starring the Question (Renee Montoya) and Spectre (Crispus Allen) 5 issues Looks to be good and has a preview here (http://www.newsarama.com/php/multimedia/album.php?aid=20664) i check this out too just for the simple fact that Dr. Light (aka the Rapist, son of a Bastard) is finally going to get whats coming to him :hehe2: Probably going to be grabbing this one too but might wait for it in trade

Story's not bad so far, but let this be a lesson to DC: Don't put Grant Morrison in charge of huge projects like this. For the crisis to end all crises, not much has happened so far, especially considering the scope of the two prior crisis events. While Barry's return and John being killed are somewhat intriguing, stuff like Turpin's narrative and the Dark Side Club are simply falling flat for me. I confess to being about a month behind in my reading, but so far, I'm unimpressed. While Grant Morrison might be a great pick for writing some titles, like New X-Men, We3, JLA, and even 52 to some degree, he seems to fail when going solo on big projects, ex: Seven Soldiers. His writing is somewhat philosophical and impenetrable for new readers, and his scripts are very vague, never plainly stating what the hell is going on. I'm convinced that had Geoff Johns been brought on to helm this project, in the same way he did Infinite Crisis and co-wrote DC Universe zero, Final Crisis would be a hell of a lot more coherent and entertaining. I'll probably see the event through till the end, but there better be one hell of a payoff.
