Day or Night time soaps?
I know that right now...there really ARENT any "night time soaps" on the air but in the past, with shows like Dallas, Dynasty, Melrose Place and most recently Fashion House, the nighttime soap format had become VERY popular throughout the last 20 years.
I'd like to see something like that again...but with Aaron Spelling gone who would be able to pull it off? there IS a difference between day and nightime soaps..so transferring "All my children" from 1 pm to 8 pm wouldnt work lol.

I was never really a big fan of Daytime Soaps... the only one I ever really watched was Passions because it premiered when I was like 14 and i could follow it from the beginning and such... Plus actors and such are replaced all the time, and they couldn't do that in a Primetime Soap, can you imagined if one night there was a voice over on Melrose Place (Tonight Amanda Woodward will be played by Christina Applegate) :)
I really liked the nighttime soaps. They were good and more dramatic, and it just seemed more ADULT to me.
I absolutely loved Melrose Place.
Everything about it was just so much fun, and on Daytime Soaps it moves at almost a glacial place..
I remember a joke from the Nanny about her friend who hadn't watched All My Children in like 10 years and Fran goes "Oh! Lemme catch you up! Well, they are still at Erika's party..."
So I liked that there was a conscious flow on what was happening and that nighttime soaps get that time to develop the characters, not have them fly by the seat of their pants.

I hated the fact that "The O.C." was being compared to Melrose Place. That show was not NEARLY on the same level as MP and if people thought "The O.C." was going to REVIVE the "night time soap" format..they were mistaken. one of its "bread and butter" characters got killed off half way through the show and the show is now CANCELLED.
I really wanted Fashion House to blow up and take hold for the night time soap format but it was only a limited series run.
I dont know WHO could pull off the success that Aaron Spelling had with night time soaps and i'm almost AFRAID of who would make a mess of writing/producing a Melrose Place reunion. its coming up on 10 years since the final episode of MP was broad cast and Dynasty , Dallas, Knots Landing and Falcon crest...even 90210 ...all night time soaps...have had some type of reuion show so MP is definately due for one soon.
as for daytime soaps? well i grew up with baby sitters who watched Young and the Restless, All My Children, General Hospital , As the World Turns and Guiding Light. I can remember ALL the main characters from the 80's during these shows and even as i got older, i kept up with AMC through the 90s.
I find it amazing that these shows have all been around for DECADES now and they dont seem to be as dictated by ratings as night time soaps are. But really...the format has stayed the same in Daytime soaps for decades and many of the actors from daytime soaps (Lisa Rinna, Jack Wagner , Marcia Cross, etc) jumped over to MP for a while before returning to Daytime and those actors/actresses seem to come to new life in their roles on nighttime soaps.
I prefer night time soaps as well, but i appreciate the history of daytime soaps..after all, if it werent for them...we probably never would have gotten a Dynasty, Dallas or MP.

I'm shocked that Sam hasn't replied to this thread yet! Personally, I could never get into daytime soap opera's, I thought the acting was bad and the storylines were predictable. Every show I tried to watch it was always "Oh my God! Jack cheated on me with Mary!" It was too sappy for me and boring.
Melrose Place and 90210 had fire, like Brandon's argument, it was more adult orientated. I remember the slogan for Melrose Place, "Monday nights just got a whole lot bitchier" or was it hotter? The catty comebacks were vicious, fresh, and the bitch fights were awesome lol. I loved Models, Inc. a spin-off from I think Melrose Place? It was a great show but I don't recall it lasting long.
I remember being in school and just daydreaming about the MP or 90210 lol what was going to happen between Dylan and Brenda now that he had an affair with Kelly or the Alison, Amanda, Billy love triangle lol.
Even the topics 90210 covered were real issues such as date rape, drug addictions, suicide, etc. I think that was another reason the show did so well.
I have yet to see a decent night soap that really captures the essence of these classic soaps. I'm just glad the Soap Opera channel plays reruns of both shows.
I have to say in the UK I prefer night time soaps such as Eastenders over the daytime ones anyday. I find them more gritty and adult and interesting.

I didn't know Eastenders was a primetime soap in the UK lol. I've always watched the daytime ones more faithfully.
