BOULDER, Colo. - A former schoolteacher was arrested Wednesday in Thailand in the slaying of 6-year-old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey — a surprise breakthrough in a lurid, decade-old murder case some feared would never be solved.

Federal officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, identified the suspect as John Mark Karr, a 42-year-old American, and one law enforcement official told The Associated Press that Boulder police had tracked him down online.
The Ramsey family's attorney in Atlanta pronounced the arrest vindication for JonBenet's parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, who had long been under suspicion in the slaying.
"John and Patsy lived their lives knowing they were innocent, trying to raise a son despite the furor around them," Wood said. "The story of this family is a story of courage, and story of an American injustice and tragedy that ultimately people will have to look back on and hopefully learn from."
The attorney said the Ramseys learned about the suspect a least a month before Patsy Ramsey's death on June 24 after a battle with ovarian cancer. "It's been a very long 10 years, and I'm just sorry Patsy isn't here for me to hug her neck," Wood said.
Karr was a teacher who once lived in Conyers, Ga., according to Wood. The attorney said the Ramseys gave police information about Karr before he was identified as a suspect in their daughter's slaying.
Wood would not say how the Ramseys knew Karr. But JonBenet was born in Atlanta in 1990, and the Ramseys lived in the Atlanta suburb of Dunwoody for several years before moving to Colorado in 1991.
Wood said Karr confessed to elements of the crime. A law enforcement source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the AP that Karr had been communicating periodically with somebody in Boulder who had been following the case and cooperating with law enforcement officials.
District Attorney Mary Lacy said the arrest followed several months of work, but she she said no further details would be released until Thursday.
Authorities said Karr was being held in Bangkok on unrelated sex charges. CBS reported he will be brought back to the United States this weekend.
JonBenet was found beaten and strangled in the basement of the family's home in Boulder on Dec. 26, 1996. Patsy Ramsey reported finding a ransom note demanding $118,000 for her daughter.
The image of blonde-haired little JonBenet in a cowgirl costume and other beauty pageant outfits has haunted TV talk shows ever since, helping feed myriad theories about her killer, and the case became one of the most sensational unsolved murder cases in the nation.
Investigators said at one point that JonBenet's parents were under an "umbrella of suspicion" in the slaying. And some news accounts cast suspicion on JonBenet's older brother. But the Ramseys insisted an intruder killed their daughter, and no one was ever charged.
In the months after the slaying, Patsy Ramsey went before the cameras, vigorously defending herself and her husband, chastising the media and blasting local law enforcement as incompetent.
Over the years, some experts suggested that investigators had botched the case so thoroughly that it might never be solved.
In a statement Wednesday, John Ramsey said: "Patsy was aware that authorities were close to making an arrest in the case and had she lived to see this day, would no doubt have been as pleased as I am with today's development almost 10 years after our daughter's murder."
The Ramseys moved back to Atlanta after their daughter's slaying.

Wood lashed out at the frenzy that long surrounded the case, and he accused the media of "the most obscene false accusations." "I think the public's mind was so poisoned against this family that no one was able for too many years to look at the evidence," he said.
Patsy Ramsey's sister, Pam Paugh, of Roswell, Ga., said the family was celebrating the news of the arrest. "We are elated. We are elated. If this is, in fact, the killer, then we have a very heinous killer off the streets to never harm another child," Paugh said.
Lib Waters of Marietta, Ga., visited the gravesites of Patsy and JonBenet Ramsey in the Atlanta suburb immediately after hearing news reports about the arrest.
Waters, who described herself as a longtime friend of the Ramsey family, taped a piece of notebook paper to JonBenet Ramsey's headstone that read: "Dearest Patsy, Justice has come for you and Jon. Rest in peace."
In 2003, a federal judge in Atlanta concluded that the evidence she reviewed suggested an intruder killed JonBenet. That opinion came with the judge's decision to dismiss a libel and slander lawsuit against the Ramseys by a freelance journalist, whom the Ramseys had named as a suspect in their daughter's murder. The Boulder district attorney at the time said she agreed with the judge's declaration.
"Today is additional vindication of the family," Wood said.
Wood said he and the Ramseys "have been totally amazed and impressed with the professionalism of law enforcement" under Lacy's direction. Lacy became district attorney in 2001.
Author Lawrence Schiller, who wrote the 1999 book, "Perfect Murder, Perfect Town" about the case, said Wednesday he understood the man had been on a list of sexual offenders who were suspects for a long time.
"There are a lot of facts about her actual death that the public does not know." Schiller said. "If he did confess to some facts of the murder, to reveal those facts of the case, that would finish the puzzle."
Among the facts he said were not generally known was the murder weapon and what the killer did with it.
Bob Grant, a former Adams County district attorney who worked on the case, said there was never enough evidence to convince him that any potential suspect could be successfully prosecuted. "I wasn't convinced it was an inside job, nor was I convinced it was an outside job," he said. "All the outside suspects were cleared after exhaustive investigation, and there were a whole lot of outside suspects."

Wow, I remember this case YEARS ago. I remember how beautiful little JonBenet was. But I always suspected the father of the killing. Something about him bothered me, or maybe it was the mother? One of the two, although I believe it was the father.

I have doubts this school teacher has committed the actual crime. What would a school teacher want with her? It doesn't add up to me, but who knows. I know the parents applied vast amounts of pressure on their daughter. Anything is possible, although I have to admit I had forgotten about this case.

Its a shame such a beautiful little girl was murdered and as such a young age too. She was just a mere child, innocent and vulnerable. IF this is the real killer, than by all means they should give him the death penalty.

This sounds bad but I always feel like the Mom did it or knew about it at least.. I just always thought that.

I hope this is the guy, or even if its not I hope this just goes away.
This story represents a macabre time in US life for me, when all anyone gave a damn about was what happpened to THIS young lady while THOUSANDS of other kids went unsearched-for and no one gave a damn.
Crime against children isterrible, and I have a young son so I cannot imagine. I also know if something happened to him (God forbid) I would want the world to help me find out what the deal was. But at the same time if he was harmed I would hope that my son would not be pushed aside along with thousands of others so a white, rich, powerful family can essentially hog the manpower, resources, and attention of the country when it comes to this subject.
Sorry for the rant, but I've been wanting to get that off my chest for a minute.

I was 19 years old when the news of Jonbenet's murder was splashed on the tv screens and news papers...it was so hard to fathom such a pretty little girl being brutalized but it was even more maddening that the colorado law enforcement officials seemed to be PROLONGING the "media circus" rather than getting down to business to find the killer. HOW could have managed to evade them for this long?

Although MANY details are being kept on the hush, as of today, the guy (a teacher no less) has ADMITTED that he killed her but that it was "an accident"  how is it an "accident" when the child was found BEATEN, STRANGLED and now its been revealed she was ALSO SEXUALLY ASSAULTED!

how the HELL is that an ACCIDENT!?

Heather, i can't BELIEVE you "have doubts" about this man's guilt when he admitted to what he did AND when he was asked he was innocent, he said "NO".

this man is BEYOND sick and depraved. he needs to have his dick CUT OFF and he needs to be publicly FLOGGED to say the least!

it's such a SHAME that Jonbenet's parents had to endure such scrutiny with pretty much being guilty in the "court of public opinion" for all these years and Patsy, who just died in june this year of cancer, is not even around to see that the killer has FINALLY been caught.

here's MORE information on the case now:

Karr says he loved JonBenet 'very much'

The suspect in the slaying of JonBenet Ramsey said he loved the 6-year-old beauty queen "very much" and is "very sorry for what happened."

In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, John Mark Karr said that he contacted JonBenet's mother, Patsy, before she died of cancer in June to express his remorse for the killing.

"I conveyed to her many things, among them that I am so very sorry for what happened to JonBenet," Karr said as U.S. and Thai authorities escorted him from his Bangkok hotel, where he spent over an hour packing his belongings.

Karr said it was his understanding that Patsy Ramsey read letters that he sent to her. He said JonBenet's death was "an accident."

"It's very important for me that everyone knows that I love her very much and that her death was unintentional," said Karr, who sweated and stuttered occasionally as he spoke in a quiet voice.

Karr, 41, was arrested Wednesday, halfway around the world from Boulder, Colo., where JonBenet's body was found beaten and strangled in her parent's basement on Dec. 26, 1996.

He declined to disclose the nature of his supposed relationship to the Ramsey family, or how he may have known JonBenet.

Asked for details of how she died, Karr replied: "It would take several hours to describe — to describe that."

"There's no way I could be brief about it. It's a very involved series of events," said Karr, who speaks with a thick Southern accent. "It's very painful for me to talk about."

Earlier in the day, Karr spoke briefly to reporters after a news conference by American and Thai authorities.

"I was with JonBenet when she died," he told reporters. Asked if he was innocent, he said: "No."

Karr will be taken within the week to Colorado, where he will face charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping and child sexual assault, said Ann Hurst of the Department of Homeland Security, one of several officials who accompanied the suspect back to his hotel.

In the run-up to Karr's arrest, U.S. authorities had rented rooms at The Blooms, the budget hotel where Karr was staying in a central Bangkok neighborhood of massage parlors and travel agencies catering to expatriates and sex tourists.

The hotel offers rooms for as little as three hours — for $8 — and monthly stays starting at $170.

Karr was staying on the top floor of the nine-story hotel in a small single room.

U.S. and Thai authorities wearing plastic gloves sorted through his possessions, which were wheeled away on a luggage rack, and included a laptop computer and two suitcases.

Dressed in a baggy turquoise polo shirt and khaki pants, Karr said that JonBenet's death was "not what it seems to be," though he declined to elaborate.

"In every way," he added, as authorities bundled him into a waiting vehicle. "It's not at all what it seems to be."

Whose to say this guy wasn't blackmailed into "confessing" on her murder? Although the guy looks creepy, I always believed it was either the father or the brother. There was something about the Dad I didn't trust.

IF he is truly guilty than I agree with you. But, its not adding up to me. Why would he confess after all these years later? Usually if its a first time murder, the killer cannot handle it and they slip up.

The clues were vague, the killer(s) were neat about this slaying. They KNEW it would receive tons of media coverage. What would a school teacher want with her? Granted, probably to gain her trust and the like.

But, its not fitting. So many people are quick to think he's the murderer because of a confession. Look at these crooked cop's today, whose to say they didn't try to intimidate him?

He looks gay to me as well, he doesn't look like he could strangle a child. But, it has been known to happen. I don't buy it though.

The killer was slick, precise, and manipulative, he avoided police and other investigators for years. I can't believe Jonbenet's murderer would turn out to be this skinny ass teacher.

I still say the father did it. Jonbent was in beauty pageants all the time and she was just six! That's a lot of pressure for a child. Whose to say her father expected more of his daughter. She was wearing make-up at a tender age. The parents were forcing her into this and being extra showy with her. Most of the time child(ren) do not enjoy being stage, but some do. I think Jonbenet's father was the murderer.

The family has money, he could pretty much buy off any police officer at any time. It would be the perfect cover up for him.

i'll admit.. i had a knee/jerk reaction myself when he "confessed." overall, it seems so ridiculous that it took 10 years for them to FINALLY nail a supposedly solid suspect in this case. NOW, more and more questions are coming up. things that were overlooked before are being revisited...it just shows how sloppy the case has been handled since the beginning of it.

i think it looks very badly on american law enforcement that a child can be brutally murdered and then not at least get justice.

I agree with this completely. But we also have some tainted police officers out there. Some will cover up anything for money. Nothing is safe anymore.

I just think it is eery timing as well because the confession comes out just so recently after the mom dies? I think that is convenient to say the least..

I still think the parents way had a hand in what happened to their daughter that night..

Last week, I ate crow, when they got this guy thinking that my suspiscions against the family were wrong all along, but now I spit that crow back up, and Im back at square one!

On another note, this guy is creepy, what should be done with him? I mean even though he didnt do it, the fact that he admitted to it, plus other things in my opinion makes him too dangerous to be around children ever in my humble opinion.

I TOLD you Farrah! The DNA results proved my theory with the guy. I still stand firm it was the father or the brother. It didn't add up at all. But I do agree with you Os, the guy looks creepy. I wonder what will happen now.

well i DID admit that i had a reflex to jump on the bandwagon simply because i remember how horrid the crime was. the idea that someone could do those things to a little girl..it NEVER becomes "common place" to me.

ultimately I (and anyone else who believed) was wrong and he WASNT the killer (but he should STILL face charges for a false confession) but he DOES have a past of inappropriate conduct with children (or was that possessing child pornography..i cant remember)

its a SHAME that not only has Jonbenet still not gotten the justice she deserves..but that the MEDIA took this and RAN with it.

further proof (i think someone mentioned this earlier on in this thread) that the media these days is less and less reliable...especially blowhards like Nancy Grace who analyze EVERY inane detail of this case to the point of nausea. Somebody should arrest HER annoying ass.
