as a child of the 80's...i have to say that the 80's gave us some of the best music...that to THIS DAY still is catchy, danceable and worth listening to.

Madonna, Prince, Michael Jackson became like the holy trinity of pop music..while other artists such as Boy George and George Michael made a mark we havent forgotten. Groups like the Bangels, Banarama, The Go-Gos also became the sound track of summers through the 80's.

Lets not forget how older artists like Diana Ross, Gladys Knight and Chaka Khan came back with a vengeance by reinventing their style of music with an urban, hip hop inflection..giving their sound more of a hard, dance beat. and Hip Hop/Rap was being birthed by artists like Blondie, Sugar Hill gang, Run DMC, Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five...........the 80's were one hell of a time for music....and now that VH1 is doing documentary/narratives on music of the 80's (from the perspective of both black artists/entertainers as well as white artists/entertainers) i was wondering what those of you who grew up in the 80's or maybe have developed a liking for 80's music had to say about this defining decade

I like the 80s because things were simple, I like a lot of us was young and didn't have any major cares. I remember middle school more than anything and the young ladies I had my first crushes on. Lisa the very first a Puerto Rican Beauty. Ah Yes! Now from that point on the music brings back memories.

1. LL Cool J "can't live without my radio"
2.Doug E Fresh (a lot of songs)
3. Slick Rick "a children's story"
4. Kid N Play "O la, O la Eh"
5. Kool Mo Dee
6. Public Enemy "Black steel in the hour of chaos"

Hip Hop was in a good stage there was only one "nasty" rapper that was Luke Skyywalker (Uncle Luke) and the 2 Live Crew. I remember Memorial day of 1986 and hearing their vulgar songs of LUKE. I think that the 1980s had superior artist who had superior talent to those of today. The songs of the 1980s are classics. Though some of the artist and times have died, the memories will always live on.

Like Relient K "I'm in love with the 80s"

I love a lot of 80s Madonna. She was new and fresh with awesome beats. I think everyone has to like a Madonna song from the 80s.

I loved just about all the 80s music. I like those love ballads from the rock bands. Man, those are the best love songs you will ever listen to.

i agree with you on that. Madonna established herself as the QUEEN of Pop in the 80's.....her music was fresh, catchy and is now the blue print of all of today's "pop tart" wannabe's. she was a true dance diva but she also had some beautiful ballads like "crazy for you" (that song kind of jerks tears from me for personal reasons)

speaking of ballads...both the "power ballads" and the sultry r&b ballads of the 80s were quite memorable.

i loved:

on my own: patti labelle
take my breath away: ????
nothing's gonna stop us now: jefferson starship
these broken wings: ????
saving all my love for you: whitney houston

Ohhhh yeah, I'm DEFINITELY a child of the 80s! :elaugh: I still find some of the music awesome to this day, and the rest just reminds me of when I was a youngen :o It's cool to see it coming into fashion these days, even tho it bugs me when folks who weren't even old enuff to know the songs are putting out covers these days  It's also lame seeing bands jump on the bandwagon, adding Cars-esque synths to their music and such.

I was a huge fan of the 'trinity', as Farrah called it. They were just so exciting at the time, like nothing else around. I remember all the girls wearing a dozen or so 'Madonna bangles' on their wrists  And of course the new sounds that were popping up, like rap/hip hop, synthpop, metal.. all still around today. The 80s definitely was a fantastic time for music. Fashion on the other hand, let's not go there ;)

Oh and I may as well add my list of fave songs from the 80's, since everyone else has :)
"99 Luftballoons/Red Balloons" - Nena
"Mickey" - Toni Basil
"Nothing Compares 2 U" - Sinead O'Connor/Prince
"Raspberry Beret" - Prince
"Kids In America" - Kim Wilde
"Rain" - Dragon
"She Bop" - Cyndi Lauper
"Time After Time" - Cyndi Lauper
"Love Is A Battlefield" - Pat Benetar
"The Sun Always Shines On TV" - a-ha
"Pride (In The Name Of Love)" - U2
anything by Depeche Mode, since they're my all time faves :o

I'm sure I've left off some. Oh well :worry:

Despite the fact that I wasn’t even born until the early nineties, the 1980s were my favorite time. I love the music, movies, and EVEN THE FASHION that came from the particular decade. Two of my favorite bands, The Bangles and The Go-Gos, as well and my third favorite musical artist, Madonna had great, great hits back then. I LOVE Madonna’s Like a Virgin album/CD/cassette and I listen to it constantly. Another one of my favorites is Venus~ Bananarama. I pretty much love everything off the Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion soundtrack…which is all music from the eighties. Actually, I’m listening to that right now. I really don’t care if all my other so-called friends and classmates prefer VERY different things, I’m going to keep on wearing my eighties style clothing and listen to Material Girl as long as I want too.

Yes girl...another fan of the Romy & Michele's Highschool Reunion sound track! that sound track sold SO WELL, they came out with a SECOND volume called "More Music from the Romy & Michele's Highschool Reunion" sound track. Entertainment Weekly praised the soundtracks as being true gems of 80's compilations. I listen to them in my house and my car all the time :D its just too bad Madonna wasnt included in the sound track...but there were many OTHER wonderful artists. i love "Dance hall days" , "Cruel Summer" and "Venus" the best from the two volumes.

I heard about the other second, but I was never able to find it anywhere. I didn't come across the first one until I went to a small store in Saginaw, Michigan. I can definitely understand why it sold to well. Almost every song on the first 'Romy and Michele' soundtrack was on my cassette tape that took me nearly a year to record off of the radio. My favorite song on it is definitely Venus...in the movie it was played at my favorite part. Anyway, my other favorites were Blood and Roses by The Smithereens and Dance Hall Days by Wang Chung.

It's amazing how much of an affect the 80s had on my generation...that wasn't even born until after it was all over. Once I actually think about it, I really can't, no matter how much I try, pick a favorite '80s' song. My top THREE are Venus, Time after Time, and anything and everything that Madonna sung in the 1980s.

I can remember being late to middle school so that I could see my favorite videos on MTV. The Hotels, Maddona, Prince, Glass Tiger, Flock Of Seagulls, Debbie Gibson, Klymax, Wham, Bangles, Men Without Hats (Safety Dance) and of course Meatloaf another of my faves. This music was all about fun. Cyndi Lauper is still going strong today and her voice is as good now as it was back then. Tina Turner was another strong presence in the 80s'. Yopu never had to turn the dial on the radio because you liked almost every song that came on. All thsoe one hit wonders...lol. What a great time for music. I miss it sometimes.

MTV was a lot better in the eighties. Even I would have considered it 'cool'. Now days, it's just garbage and pre-teens screaming their heads off. My mother told me that back then they'd have game shows and programs that actually related to music. All the music from the nineteen eighties was great, in my opinion.

Yes, MTV was awesome in the 80's and early 90's. They actually played music video's all the time, and the game shows related to music. That was the best.

But now they have drama's on MTV and most of it doesn't relate to music at all (My Sweet 16, Laguna Beach, etc). Its nothing more than cheap television to satisfy hungry audiences.

I signed up for MTV2 because their motto was "music video's 24, 7." I get it and there's Jackass, Real World, etc. :sure: I wanted music video's! Not shows, granted those shows are entertaining but I wish their was a channel with just video's.

VH1 is bad too by putting on movies that aren't music related (they do play musicals though). Ah, the glory of the 80's.

The 80's had some forgetable stuff as well, Tarzan Boy anyone? Or how about Heartbeat by the guy from Miami vice. My favourite 80s stuff is Metallica, Genesis, Peter Gabriel(in your eyes is the greatest love song of all time, imo), Paul Simon(awesome in any decade), U2, Bon Jovi, Public Enemy, Run DMC and Motley Crue. But yeah the 80s kicked the 90s but!

Heartbeat was by Don Johnson...and yes it IS pretty funny to look back on that video now :haha: if you watch him, it looks as though he REALLY thinks he's doing something LOL!!

there was another NOTABLE "one hit wonder" in the 80's...."Mickey"- by Toni Basil

that song is STILL a dance classic..and even though its Toni's ONLY mega smash #1 song in the United States, she continued to work behind the scenes as a choreographer, writer and producer for others including Janet Jackson.

Eddie Murphy did a song too but it flopped! lol In the video he had Rick James grooving to the song, it was lame.

The one song I liked was (and I can't recall the title) but it was by the actor Jack Wagner (Peter, from Melrose Place). That song was good.
