Lance Bass, band member of 'N Sync, says he's gay and in a "very stable" relationship with a reality show star. Bass, who formed 'N Sync with Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick, tells People magazine that he didn't earlier disclose his sexuality because he didn't want to affect the group's popularity.

"I knew that I was in this popular band and I had four other guys' careers in my hand, and I knew that if I ever acted on it or even said (that I was gay), it would overpower everything," he tells the magazine.

'N Sync is known for a string of hits including "Bye Bye Bye" and "It's Gonna Be Me." The band went on hiatus in 2002. Bass has also found headlines for undertaking astronaut training and failing to raise money for a trip into space.

Bass says he wondered if his coming out could prompt "the end of 'N Sync." He explains, "So I had that weight on me of like, `Wow, if I ever let anyone know, it's bad.' So I just never did."

The singer says he's in a "very stable" relationship with 32-year-old actor Reichen Lehmkuhl, winner of season four of CBS' "Amazing Race."

Bass and Fatone, 29, are developing a sitcom pilot inspired by the screwball comedy "The Odd Couple," in which his character will be gay.

"The thing is, I'm not ashamed — that's the one thing I went to say," Bass says. "I don't think it's wrong, I'm not devastated going through this. I'm more liberated and happy than I've been my whole life. I'm just happy."

I am not surprised by that at ALL. I hope he is happy and has a good life. It does take courage to come out, especially with his rep from the boy band.

I too am not surprised at this. I always thought he was gay lol so this isn't a shock at all. Props to him for coming out though, I wonder if he had a crush on Justin Timberlake LOL. :raspberry :D ;)

Yeah, i'm not surprised either. I was thinking it was either him or Joey Fatone. But good for him for coming out....although it wasn't really a shocker. lol

"Why now?" comes to my mind, I mean he could have come out when he was popular (like Ian McKellen did) but he waited till the public interest in him faded out, only then, he came out! It looks suspicious. I mean this "astonishing" or "not surprising" fact about his sexuality is being displayed on in every gay or assumed gay actor's message board on imdb and etc, and that is publicity, no matter what. Is he working on a solo album? Just checking.

I wondered that myself. even at the height of their popularity, Lance was the LEAST noticed of the group and the least attractive (to me anyway).

i've noticed in years past (long before Nsync was even on the radar) that several musical artists actually BENEFITED from "coming out". Melissa Ethridge and K.D. Lang both experienced a major boost in popularity and record sales back in the 1990's when they announced they were lesbians. BUT they did this WHILE they were up and coming..not when they were on the decline in their popularity. Madonna enjoyed dizzyingly high levels of popularity by hinting at her bi-sexuality in many ways through the 80's and 90's.

even in the hiphop industry you've had some people who have come out, like rapper Mystikal, who was very candid about it in television interview.

Well, just like everyone else I'm not surprised either. Don't really care about it. It'd be of more consequence if he were still a star and you could see a shift in record sales based upon the announcement. *shrugs*

Lance said he didn't come out because he was in a band with 4 other guys and didn't want to put their career in jeapordy.. which is fair enough really. That, plus he wasn't actually going to make a big coming out speech if it were not for the rumours flying around the past few months.

Meanwhile, I think the biggest surprise here is that only one member of N*Sync (http://mallea.sites.uol.com.br/pics/nsync/nsync_group09.jpg) is gay. -- and more so, that it was the ugly, creepy, space cadet one and not one of the over-the-top meterosexuals of the band.
