New Line resurrecting "Battle Royale"

Variety reports that New Line Cinema will commission a remake to the Japanese sci-fi film "Battle Royale." Neal Moritz and Roy Lee will produce the feature.
The original is set in the future and tells of Japanese school children randomly selected by a fascist government lottery called "Battle Royale." They are kidnapped and forced onto an isolated island, where they are equipped with food, water, a map and a random weapon. On the island, they have to compete in a violent death match game till only one single victor remain. Failure to follow the rules or participate in the death match results in death by an exploding collar everyone has to wear.

This has also been confirmed with announcements on G4TV, and on the scifi channel.

For more info on Battle Royale, pick up the novel, see the Japanese films spawned from it, check out the manga series, and here's a site for more direct Battle Royale information.

That was an absolutely awesome movie. As long as they keep it a hard R and don't try to detract from the shock value it could be just as good, if not better, in English.

Only time will tell, I suppose.

I read the book and saw the movie, they were both off the hook. My guess is they will tone it down Fearing that American audiences will not be ready to see high school kids killing each other.

And toning it down is just what a movie like this doesn't need, considering the full subject matter involved. It's partially that bluntness in the visuals that helps get across the impact the book and movie was intended to have. Did you see the sequel?

I love the movie and just really can't see why they would wanna make an American version. Or, I mean, I can't imagine it'll be as good...

I feel the same way about this. It is totally unnecessary to remake it. Kinji Fukasaku did a great job, and I don't think anyone to compete it. Who is the remake guy, btw?

I just hope they don't cast the movie with a bunch of people from the WB. Go for some no-name actors for the most part, with a couple of bankable stars for the leads.

Any thoughts on who should play the headmaster? Brendan Gleeson could be cool.
