Just coming of the back end of Desp-heads (Desperate Houswives) I watched an episode where a woman was still breast feeding her child at the age of five.
Personally in my humble opinion, I feel that if the child is old enough to walk over to his Mum and ask for it then they are too old.
Though I cannot give an age as to how old a child should be when the Mum stops breast feeding.
So I put it to the board; At what age should breast feeding stop?

When the child is eating solid foods and no longer needs a bottle. Probably 18 months to 2 years iirc.

in some parts of the world..its considered NORMAL to nurse/breast feed your child until the age of five. I cant remember which countries BUT i do remember reading about this in one of my "history of women" courses in college. It's only viewed with such aversion (even though there are medicaly proven benefits) in America because of the extreme objectification of a woman's breasts as sexual objects. the fact that that both men AND women posses mammory glands and that its women's ESTROGEN that makes ours such much more NOTICEABLE (hence our busts) seems to be lost on many people.
Like Vilandra said, in America its usually by age 2 (maximum) that women stop breast feeding their children. But in OTHER places around the world ...you will see women nursing their children until age 5 or 6 even....and the people think nothing of it. These children have been shown to be less prone to agressive behavior, more even tempered and a few other things.

Breast feeding at five? :worry: :sure: Wow, that's a little TOO old for the child. He/she should be eating solid foods like Vil said. Parents these days are pushovers. If its not feeding their child everything making the baby about one hundred pounds over weight, its breast feeding at five. lol.

When the child asks for "is it happy hour yet" then it's time to stop!

At my niece's birthday party last year I believe, I wasn't there because I live in another city, but my family was there. And there was this family there, mom and like I want to say 4 boys. And the youngest one was six or so I think. And in the middle of things, he goes up to the mum and says, "Boob." And she whips it out and starts feeding him. Come on.

Yeah, one of my old friends from Bristol had a little brother who was breast-fed until he was about 5.
Apparently he's huge now, despite being only 16...last time he was arrested, it took three policemen to bring him down. His brother, my old friend, is understandably a little ashamed, especially since he's at Oxford University...

If it is when a child eats solid food then my brother should never have been breast fed, he was a baby who always had a chicken bone in his hand. In fact he was asleep once with a chicken leg in his hand I took it from him and he cried.
Babies in my family stop being breast fed early on so I would say when they are 18 months.

That's not that early - I would say that's normal :) My niece is almost one and is now on regular milk (rather than formula).

Some parents' strangeness amazes me to the extreme! Who on Earth would breast feed a grown child??!!??!!??!!??!! It's CRAZY. I mean, I totally believe in breast feeding babies. That's how nature is meant to be...but it SHOULD stop as soon as the child can eat REAL food or sooner. Otherwise it's just sickening.
Oh MY GODdess, that was hilarious how Vilandra told that story about the "Boob"...*giggles*

I wanted to breast feed my son unfortunately he never could latch on right or wouldn't latch on anyways, I tried every method from the football hold to all the others. I wanted to Breast feed him for a year as thats what most people say you should breast feed until, but dragging the breast pump out everyday sucked and because I didn't do it often enough but my son did drink breast milk for a good two months which helped his immune system.
I think a mother shouldn't breast feed past i'd say two years if that. I just find it creepy for a mom to be still breast feeding past that....
I have to say I would not want to breast feed a 2 year old let alone a 5 year old. once they have teeth...ouch!
I breast and pump fed Abbie till she was around 2 months cause we had problems with her latching on also.

I agree with you on the teeth part, that would really suck but I've heard from some women they dont even notice it... I dont understand that but maybe they are used to being bit there or something.
I mean when I was pregnant and decided to breast feed I figured i'd do it till he got teeth but when he didnt latch it went out the window. My son started getting his teeth about 5 months old though so i'm kinda glad I didnt do it past what I did. I do know I could never picture Jonathan being 5 or 6 years old still attached to my boob I mean it makes you wonder if that will mess with a kids mental state.

I watched this special on BBC (who always seem to have the most BIZARRE specials by the way) about these women who breast feed WAY past the normal age, i'm talking like 8-10 years old. It was disturbing to say the least, but I was conflicted, is this wrong and is this like "sexual abuse" , I just feel when they are old enough to look at your boob and say "gimme" then that is TOO Old.

WHERE were these women? you're looking at it from our (the american) standard but the rest of the world isnt set to our standard. there are other countries (india for example, as i once read) where women will breast feed their children till about age 5 and there is nothing sexual or creepy about it in their society.
women's breasts are OBJECTIFIED in our woefully patriarchal society in america and issues of sex are so needlessly "Charged" and taboo in american society that its no wonder we (or some of us) look at things the way they do.

Yes, please. Oh, wait, this thread was asking how we felt about breastfeeding? My mistake.
