I've been into anime since the late 70's with show's such as Force Five and Starblazers...
In recent years I've been impressed with what has come out...
My favs are:

I have never really been into Anime, I guess the only kind of Anime I have ever watched was Pokemon when I was younger lol...

And a little bit of Sailor Moon I guess, but other than that I don't really know much about the genre... Maybe I should check it out? Anyone have some other suggestions?

Robotech (I have all 85 episodes on DVD)

Fist of the North Star (Kenshiro!)

Captain Harlock Mythos (Harlock, Emeraldas, and Tochiro!)

I also am looking into other Stuff on the Anime Network,
most of it's too demonic, violent or sexual for me though.

Dirty Pair was all right every now and then . .

Ninja Scroll was cool; that said, I tend to like the more arty, less battle oriented anime; the two that spring to mind are Hayao Miyazaki's masterworks Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle: both were completely excellent, with Spirited Away easily being one of the best films I've seen.

I have too many to list, but I'll try and add a few that I think are exceptional.
Keep in mind that I started watching anime around '96.

Original Bubblegum Crisis
Robotech (Complete Series)
Dragonball Z
Ghost In the shell: Stand Alone Complex
Mononoke Hime
Mai Hime
Gundam Seed
Naruto
Bleach
Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien
Elfen Lied
Chrno Crusade
Green Green
3x3 Eyes

I know I'm forgetting a bunch of stuff. Anyway, I pretty much watch the original japanese versions through the internet until they become available on dvd here in the states. I've seen pretty much 70% of the anime that's been made available to download from '99 to present!

anime is a beautiful and often erotic form to watch..sexuality, gender roles and violence are blurred in an erotic mix and thats one of the reasons why i enjoy it so much.

I'm kind of an old school gal when it comes to anime as i like:
Oh my goddess!
Project Ako
Devil Hunter Yoku
Bubblegum Crisis
Cowboy Bee-bop
Robotech

and finally SAILOR MOONhttp://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/93/Sailor_Senshi.png

...and i MUST speak on behalf of this show as its often dismissed due to the half assed, mega edited version that most people have seen in america on the WB or Cartoon Network. the REAL Sailor moon: sailor senshi/pretty guardian/pretty sailor soldiers is actually a beautiful and quite action packed anime series and falls under the genre of "magickal girl anime"..it was designed to appeal towards women BUT it also drew a large male following.

many things that have been seen in the american version are the OPPOSITE in the real, uncut japanese version. for example...when the sailor soldiers go through their transformation sequence, there's nudity. Sailor Neptune and Sailor Unranus are actually lesbian lovers and NOT cousins (as they appear in the american version), there is profanity and lots more physicality, and from way back in the Sailor Moon R series....two of Queen Beryl's generals: Zoicyte and Malachite are actually gay lovers. Zoicyte, in the american version is a female but in the uncut japanese version-- Zoicyte is a male and very much in love with Malachite who returns the affection. then there are the Sailor Stars...a strange trio who are MEN but turn into WOMEN when they become Sailor Soldiers.

The end of the series in 1997 was very sad..as all of the sailor soldiers DIED in a cataclysmic battle but they went down in a blaze of glory.

Man...I was a BIG fan of Robotech..when I get some extra $$ I'm going to buy the series on DVD...I read the novels last year and they are awesome as well...

Bubblegum Crisis is cool..and Cowboy Bebop the movie was awesome...

For anyone who hasn't seen it...I'd recommend Starblazers..that was a GREAT series.

Spellbinder..have you seen it?
I'd also recommend Ghost in the Shell...(this one is for the cerebral types like yourself)

Ghost in the Shell was pretty good; Dragonball Z was very fun...I remember the Dragonball Weekends, watching the show from 6am-9pm (one full saga per day)...

Also, the anime called "Lupin", about a master thief by the same name, was truly awesome. Really well scripted, and with fantastic action sequences.

One more that I've just remembered: Akira. Twisted, disturbed, truly awesome in detail and scope.

Oh man..how the heck could I forget:

http://www.thelongestsite.de/gfx/Cover/RobotCarnival.jpg

Damn this was good film...collected animated shorts by the top animators and directors in Japan...the score is AWESOME....maybe the BEST soundtrack I EVER heard...

The story: Presence is so deep and messed up....Deprive is a good simple little story..and Cloud was entrancing..with all the clouds changing colors and shapes..good stuff....

For movies I've always loved Akira and Miyazaki's stuff (don't know if you'd really call it anime though), but i just found a really fun show on the Cartoon Network about mini amnesiac sorcerer and his boy genius pal: Zatch Bell (www.zatch-bell.com). anyone else seen it? any other mamodos?

I don't know...I could never get into Akira...I just felt like it was lacking something...plus I felt the ending was anti-climatic and very unresolved...but that's just how I felt about it...

I can't believe there aren't any more Leji Matsumato (sp?) fans.

Sailor Moon "she got the boom na na na to make me think the wrong thing"
Bare Naked Ladies

I think one thing that hurts Leji is that his stuff is so SLOW and sometimes so BORING. . his lively actions like the last couple of episode of Captain Zero are good. Leji does have beautifl music, the most beautiful in Captain Zero.
He uses this theme "Time (Jadai)" and it's awesome music.

I appreciate directors who can use music in non anime no one uses music in their production as excellent like George Lucas and Q. Tarantino.

Still haven't got round to seeing Howl's Moving Castle yet

I've seen this show fansubbed until there was a break in the subtitling. It's still going on in japan as of now I believe. I know the show as Konjiki No Gash-Bell. I really hate that they changed the name to Zatch-bell. But anyway, I love this show, it's hiliarious!

My favorite anime series is Magic Knight Rayearth, even though I haven't exactly seen it yet. But I have played the RPG which was totally awesome. My second favorite anime is Samurai Girl. My only other favorites are Hellsing, Neon Genesis Evangaleon, Sailor Moon, and Digimon Season 3.

My favorite anime movie Akira and second is Princess Mononoke.

I used to watch Sailor Moon reruns when I was nine, but other than that I don’t know anything about anime. I watch Dragonball Z a lot, too. I never got into the whole ‘Pokemon’ then. It seem stupid. *sneaks out of thread trying not to get beat up by anime-lovers*

Serouisly, I was at a meeting today (I am a Cop) and I mentioned I watch Anime and the other cops were like

:sure:

What is wrong with Anime? I don't watch all that soft porn crap,
or that magic and demons from other universes vampire ghost type mess.

I watch good clean sci fi Anime . . . some guy even dissed
LEJI MATSUMOTO!!!!!!!!! HOW???

THE MAN WHO INVENTED HARLOCK SHOULD NOT BE DISSED!!!!!!!!!!

If you love Anime stand up . .

The thing is Anime carries around with it a porn like stigma due to the wide spread notoriety of films like Urotsukidoji and Wicked City. Not to mention series like Bible Black. As well as your colleagues looking at you thinking grown man cartoons = ...........

But that says Anime rules and if you get past the fact they are cartoons and you can appreciate the art it makes it just that much better.

Recently I bought a film called Sky Blue that took 7yrs to make and sweet [insert deity] did it look great!

DDD,

I agree I think it's "Grown Man/woman + Cartoons = Loser" that's the formula in their minds.

Look at Robotech, or Fist of the North Star (Hokuto Shin Ken, Nanto SUi Cho Ken) or HARLOCK . . . how can they deny the mystery the intelligence of HARLOCK . .. a legend .. look past his piracy and see what he represents, Emeraldas, Tochiro . . . . .Captain Zero . . the music is beautiful even though Zero is boring as all get out.

The Gun Frontier Harlcok stories are horrible though, unwatchable.

I still would liketo do a LOTR esque Robotech Trilogy . . .

Imagine the fame, the money, the Oscars . . .

Wow Zor you just spun off a whole list of Anime I have never heard of, lol!

There is a very valid reason, living in England we just don't get the Anime. The censoring laws are just odd.

It is a shame anime is one of the most overlooked genre's in the Western world because they are essentially cartoons. But there is more thought and multisided layers to the characters and plots than many many films coming out of Hollywood. I swear by films like Perfect Blue, Sky Blue, Space Adventure Cobra and Wind of Amnesia.

Still some Anime just don't make for good live action, Fist of the North Star sucked as a live action film. Personally I feel that they pick the wrong anime's, Perfect Blue if was made into Live Action with the narrative and plot would make for one of the best films ever.

Well after reading three pages I can not believe that no one here has mentioned Perfect Blue yet. That movie is absolutely head and shoulders above most of the LIVE ACTION movies I've seen. It's twisting plot, violent murders, and twisted view of the Jpop world were all amazing.

I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemies. You need help and being THE DOCTOR I am prescribing you with an untested (well...on Humans anyway, The Horses seemed to like it, just kidding...) drug that will make you actually believe you are a talking cat from some random Anime series no one remembers. That should cure you of these very disturbing thoughts.

Now for Flashforward...I HAVE a job, SUCKA! And you have totally got it wrong all of us do not have ENOUGH time on our hands, we need more. That is why I am planning to do an Omnidimensional Convergence that will merge together all realities and thus by funneling the cosmic energies unleashed by their deaths into myself I shall become a Nexus-Being and shall grant more TIME for everybody! Hell if you are all nice to me I might even give you all your own Universes to rule over as Gods.
